The Tide

by Natasa Pap

As the sun was slowly lowering itself into the Adriatic Sea, the light of its evening glow painted the city of Zadar in beautiful shades of gold and orange.

A lovely couple was passing through Zadar’s old town, admiring the ancient Roman ruins decorating the park in the town’s centre. They crossed the street and strolled through the small souvenir market, but as they got closer to the docks, they could feel the fresh, salty breeze of the sea and the voices of the seagulls echoing in the wind.

They bought roasted corn from a street merchant on the corner. The texture of the corn and the taste of salt pleased their tastebuds more than some fancy dish in a ridiculously expensive restaurant ever could.

As they walked down the long promenade the couple admired the beautiful sunset. The orange-red sun was disappearing into the water, painting the sky in shades of yellow, orange, red, grey, pink and purple. The sea was a dark shade of blue that was getting darker every minute, mixed with some dark green in it.

They reached the Sea Organ, a popular tourist spot in Zadar, then sat on the man-made stone steps and listened.

They listened to the sounds of the sea waves colliding with the concrete they were sitting on. The salt in the water and the sound it made, reminded them of opening a bottle of sparkling water.

As the waves crashed into the steps, they produced a lovely melody that travelled from the holes made in these steps into the ears of the nearby listeners adding to the magic and the beauty of the scenery.

The couple sat on the steps, holding each other, eating roasted corn, observing the waves on the water while listening to the music of the Sea Organ. The sun was getting smaller and smaller while boats floated on the water in the distance.

As the sky got darker, its surface was graced by the appearance of stars in greater and greater numbers.

The couple soon spotted their favourite star decorating the horizon. They turned to each other and shared a sweet loving kiss.
