Writing inspired by the following SWC prompts:

Are you normal?

Are You Normal?

by Franziska Singer

I am normal
In the way that I breathe and feel
Have thoughts and needs
Am human

I am normal
If that means, to be here
On this earth
Among others
Big and small
With rosy flesh and darker shades

I am normal
I eat and drink
Sometimes I cry
Sometimes I don’t, when the hurt gets too much
When it hurts to be alive

I am normal
Laughing, learning
Always scared to let down the mask
To be watched and judged
And to never be seen

I am normal
I love fluffy pets
The touch of a hand
I get scared in the dark
Because no one is there
What if someone is there?

I am normal
I can’t sleep at night
When the lights are too bright
And the thought of you, gone
I miss you

I am normal
I so want to be
Want to be loved
And cared for
Isn’t that normal?

I am normal
In the way that there is no normal
In the way that I breathe and feel
Have thoughts and needs
Am human

I am normal
Benevolent and good
Not the fiend that you see
Or maybe I am
Because you made me
