Writing inspired by the following SWC prompt:

The Winter Window Box

Vibrant with glorious colours, lush and beautiful all summer long, the flowers in the
window box outside apartment number 18 brought a little happiness to both
neighbours and passers-by. So what clever and inventive idea does the resident of
number 18 have to keep the window box looking amazing during the winter?

The Window Box of Number 18

by Katya Hooker-Winkler

Overflowing with yellow petunias
bursting with blue dahlias
speckled with fuchsia geraniums
splashed with purple lavender
it beckons your eye
so vivid
in a world of
grey streets and cold clouds
as pedestrians hug their shoulders
to their ears
and hurry home

but every passerby goes
from monochrome
to kodachrome
their shoulders drop
and slow their gait
as they pass the window box of number 18

the woman of number 18
waters her flowers
with the sun
she harvested it in the last days of August
when she held up her watering cans over her head
and let the rays of sunshine
pour in
the molten gold is stable
when you keep it at room temperature
every day she pours
the light
into her flowers
and they start to glow
from within
